Working Together For Zimbabwe's Future

Dear Readers,

Our return to Zimbabwe is scheduled for June 28.  We are looking forward to returning and attempting to work through some of the problems that have developed recently.  It is our goal to see buildings completed that were under way when we left a year ago.  Apparently, we can no longer rely on work to continue in our absence, as had been the case in the past.  The current situation in the country has had a serious impact on the people.  Currently people cannot afford to purchase food that is available.  Can any of us in this country truly know what it is to be hungry?

On March 6, 2004 a group of friends gathered to help load two 40-foot sea containers with books, school supplies, computers and classroom furniture.  That is a lot of packing and it took the entire day.  We are thankful that at that time of year the weather was good to us.  It was a mild sunny day.  These containers will arrive in Zimbabwe in June or July.

At the moment they are sitting on the docks somewhere on the East Coast waiting for a US Flag ship.

Recently two containers of food were also shipped.  One container contains 45,000lbs of rice and the other 45,000lbs of pinto beans.  This food will help keep the Orphan Care Center operating for about one year.  Some of you may remember that two more satellite-feeding centers were opened at neighboring schools in 2003.  These three centers are now caring for approximately 650 children.  It requires a great deal of food to care for these children who have no one to look out for them.

One of the goals for this trip is to research and see if Zimbabwe has a distributor for a self-contained toilet.  Ralph has found a place in South Africa that makes these units, however, it would be less complicated for us if they would be available in Zimbabwe.  If not we will have to go through the process of finding an importer that would bring them into the country for us.

Pit toilets are everywhere one looks in the rural area.  Many times they are too close to a water source.  A real concern for several years is the pollution of the water by human waste.  Many people die each year from drinking polluted water.  The unit that Ralph has recently come across is a sealed plastic tank that is designed in such a way that when it fills up, the waste can be removed.  When the waste is composted, it can be used on the fields.  The one requirement when putting them in a new house is that the toilet side of the house must face the sun.  They are designed in such a way that there is no odor.  Putting a unit in a building so that it faces the sun helps with decomposition.

A donation of $650.00 will purchase one of the toilet units.

$10.00 will feed one child for a month

$35.00 will purchase 100lbs of rice and 100lbs of beans

$20.00 will buy two school uniforms for a child that will last one year.

$25.00 will buy a child a pair of shoes.

Can you help us provide for these children that have nothing?

In His Service,

Ralph and Roberta
