RENEWED HOPE CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

ANNUAL REPORT

JUNE 30, 2000 TO JULY 1, 2001

As I write this report, we are still in Zimbabwe.  We arrived in early March and at this time do not have a return date scheduled.  Everything depends on how projects progress and whether we are able to extend out Visas.  It is possible we will have to leave before we are wanting to.

First of all, Ralph and I want to thank you for your continued prayers and support of the work we are attempting to carry out here.  The work accomplished and that still in progress would not have been possible without the continued love and support of our many friends.

We have found life much more difficult this trip than in the past.  People are more desperate to just survive.  They no longer ask for help they are begging for it.  Seeing the masses of Street Children is heart wrenching.  Some of the children are orphans and some have gone to the streets because there is nothing at home to eat or maybe there is just no home.  Orphans from the rural areas are finding their way to the city hoping to find something better.  Life for orphans with extended families is not always tolerable.  These children are often sexually abused.  Frequently, they are used as child labor and not allowed to attend school.  Some are starving because there is no food left after the rest of the family has eaten.

Many commodities that were available in the past are no longer to be found.  Often the things that are available are way too expensive.  Prescription Drugs are increasing by 25% per week.  Bread will take another price increase as wheat has gone up.  It is projected that there will be a serious food shortage by the end of the year.  Meat is no longer affordable for the people where we are working.  Most people will deal with price increases since fuel took a 70% jump this past week. Immediately, bus fares increased and we have seen a significant reduction of traffic in Harare.  There are many more bicycles on the street.  Bus fare from Nyamashato to Murewa, 35 km away, is now 100ZD each way.  One of the teachers, whose father had recently passed away, needed to go home to take care of some business.  He estimated that petrol for his car would cost him 8,000ZD for the round trip.  Immediately, the postal service shut down.  It is impossible to mail a letter.  Thank goodness for computers.

People are desperately hungry.  Many children are so thin.  I especially am made aware of this when I try uniforms on the children for size.  Many have protruding abdomens.  This is not always evident in the pictures that I e-mail home.  The poor condition of their clothing is not always apparent in the pictures either.

PROJECT UP-DATE

One of the main projects to date is the funding for the construction of a teacher’s house at Inyagui Primary School.  This was of top priority as three families were occupying a small four-room house.  One house had totally collapsed which had necessitated additional crowding.  Teachers cannot function at their best when living conditions are so substandard.

Two classroom floors at Nyamashato Primary were in terrible condition.  They were broken out and repaired with new cement.

Chingwaru Primary requested funding for a roof on one two-classroom block. They didn’t even request funding for labor only for the materials. The parents had come together and rebuilt the building to the roof level. Their initiative was impressive and we felt deserved a helping hand.

The balance of the money, which has been donated, will be used to build an Orphan Care Center.  At the present time, our hope is to be able to provide breakfast and lunch for the most needy orphans, especially for child headed households.  In addition children who are living in difficult circumstances will also receive two meals a day.  We are hoping to break ground for this facility within the next several weeks.

FUTURE NEEDS

Our goal is to continue to support the feeding program at the Orphan Care Center and to possibly open another feeding facility at another school too distant for children to come here.

In addition we want to provide funding to train a local person with the skills to provide bereavement counseling and AIDS/HIV counseling.  We would also like to be able to provide training to child headed households in life skills necessary in traditional living.

IN SUMMARY

We wish we could find the words to express our THANKS for your kindness, compassion, prayers, and love that all of you have shown to us in the past.  You have done so much to help the needy children and families in Zimbabwe.  We wish you could see the smiles and love that the children and families show with your gifts, some of them handmade.  The monetary donations have helped so much with our projects.

We are the lucky ones to receive all this love and have been blessed and look forward to continuing our compassion, kindness and love to the needy children and families.  Your support has been a great inspiration to us.

Warmest regards,

Ralph and Roberta Pippitt
